 Goldie Makes the News

 by Jennifer Watts

On the library porch, a little cat lay.

'Twas in April, a bright sunshiny day.

Goldie greeted the children; he welcomed each pat.

You see, Goldie was known as the library cat.

When the last child had gone inside,

Goldie swished his tail and sadly sighed.

Cats were not allowed in the library,

So Goldie strolled 'round to see what he could see.

On the back porch he stopped for a rest.

Then out popped Lily, the green lizard pest.

Lily streaked and slithered, did her usual best

To annoy Goldie, to disturb his rest.

"Go away," said Goldie. "Leave me alone.

When I count to three, you'd better be gone."

"But I know a secret," said Lily the pest.

"I sneaked inside the library, I have to confess."

"I zipped in where the door opened wide,

Ran under a cart where I could hide.

I saw the children getting ready to go

For their garden program at the gazebo."

"But that's outside," said Goldie, "so I can attend;

I'm going to the garden, my little friend."

The children shouted when Goldie came into sight.

Mrs. Kim stepped forward and smiled with delight.

Mrs. Kim lifted Goldie, set him up high.

Goldie was puzzled, he didn't know why.

A red and white banner flew over his head;

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK the banner read.

"This is a special week," said Mrs. Kim.

"We're placing a brick for Goldie, in honor of him."

The engraved brick was placed at Goldie's side.

Goldie was pleased, his eyes shone with pride.

Mrs. Kim read the engraved words as Goldie sat,

"In Honor of Goldie, the library cat."

The kids were happy, they cheered and they clapped,

As the red and white banner joyfully flapped.

Goldie smiled for the camera again and again,

Even posed with Ms. Jewel, the Head Librarian.

When the newspaper came to the library next day,

Mrs. Kim brought it out to where Goldie lay.

"In Honor of Goldie," the newspaper read.

"The Best Library Cat", that's what it said.

Goldie's picture was on the front page

For everyone to see his proud, smiling face.

Goldie was famous all over town;

Folks all knew where he could be found.

At the library door the little cat sat,

Greeting patrons was Goldie, the library cat!
